Didactic Bricks
An adaptable and tailorable teaching tool for educators implementing Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)
Teachers know how challenging it can be to bring sustainability into lessons—especially when preparation time is limited, administrative tasks pile up, and pre-made materials from publishers don’t always spark creativity or connect with students’ real lives.
That’s why we are developing Didactic Bricks: flexible, creative, action-oriented learning activities designed for teachers who want to implement Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in their classrooms.
This ERASMUS+ project empowers educators to easily design and deliver lessons—or even whole interdisciplinary projects—that engage students (ages 10–15) in solving real-world sustainability challenges.
What are Didactic Bricks?
They are modular, ready-to-use activities that educators can use in different ways:
Individually: as a single, engaging lesson.
Combined: like a music playlist, building entire thematic units.
These bricks:
Adapt to the classroom curriculum, teaching style, and student needs.
Connect learning to real-world sustainability themes.
Support interdisciplinary work across subjects such as: Natural Science, Social Studies, Mathematics, National Language, English, Arts, Home Economics and others.
Enable collaboration with other teachers—locally and online—to co-create and share materials.
Equip students with social-entrepreneurial skills and a sense of active hope for shaping a sustainable future.

Didactic Bricks Hackathon (October, 2025)
29 teachers from Slovenia, the Netherlands, and Denmark, together with 6 partner organisations, came together to brainstorm how to imagine and build the prototype of Didactic Bricks tool.
During 3 days, we were building (& hacking!) the prototype with teachers, from the bottom up. 🆙
The hackathon took place at the newly certified Green Key International hotel, Terme Čatež, a fitting setting for creative and sustainable ideas to grow.
A huge thank you to Suzanne Bech Crawfurd for leading the dynamic and community learning exercises that brought everyone’s ideas together.👥

Who is behind this project?
This is a collaborative, Erasmus+ initiative led by:
Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) – one of the world's largest environmental education organisations, with over 110 member organisations in 85 countries and 5 environmental education programmes including Eco-Schools
&LEARNING – initiator and co-developer of the bricks concept in Denmark
Društvo DOVES - FEE Member organisation in Slovenia

Leren voor Morgen – cooperative of 170+ organisations supporting ESD in The Netherlands
How educators can take part?
When the prototype is developed, we will be inviting teachers like you to test and use Didactic Bricks in your classroom. The focus is on these three themes:
Nature & Biodiversity
Food & Beverages
Textiles & Fashion
Teachers that join are able to:
Collaborate with colleagues and international partners.
Co-develop ready-to-use sustainability lessons.
Test the materials with your students and share feedback to improve them for others.
